Tips and tricks
Parades close to CastleDay
Any parades in the Bywater, Marigny, or French Quarter are very easy to get to from CastleDay. Refer to the calendar above for great nearby parades.
Wear comfortable shoes
You'll be walking and standing for hours on uneven pavement, so leave the heels at home.
Dress in layers
New Orleans weather can swing quickly between chilly mornings and warm afternoons. Bring a light rain jacket just in case.
Bring a catch bag
Totes or backpacks you don't mind getting dirty are perfect for holding beads, cups, and other parade throws.
Respect parade etiquette
Stay behind barricades, make room for the krewes, dancers, and marching bands, and only cross parade streets when no floats are coming and it is safe to do so. Drink responsibly, and be aware that emergency services have a hard time reaching areas blocked by parade routes.
Plan transportation early
Streets close and parking fills up fast, so arrive early, carpool, or use streetcars and rideshares. Bus and streetcar routes are detoured or suspended two hours before each parade and resume once parades clear out.
Go with the flow
Don't overschedule your day. The best moments often happen between parades or while exploring.
Staying comfortable on the route
Bring water, keep your phone charged or bring a power bank, and pick a meeting spot in case you get separated from your group. Bathrooms can be hard to come by, so take advantage when you have the chance; hotels and restaurants are often friendly about restrooms, and porta potties usually line the parade routes.
Support local
Try king cake, gumbo, or po-boys from neighborhood vendors and enjoy the authentic taste of Carnival season.
