Do we need to be within walking distance of the French Quarter?
No, and with a big group you probably don’t want to be. The Quarter is the best afternoon and the best night out in America; it is not where a crew of fourteen sleeps well, swims, or fits. It’s a ten-minute ride from our front door, which turns out to be the right distance.
The short answer
What “walking distance” actually buys a big group.
Here’s the fact most planners don’t know: short-term rentals are banned in nearly all of the French Quarter. The city’s only exception is a six-block stretch of Bourbon Street zoned for entertainment, which is bars, not houses. So when a group searches “house walking distance to the French Quarter,” the honest inventory is a hotel block (the crew split down a hallway, no kitchen, no pool, nowhere for everyone to land at 1 AM) or a listing worth asking hard questions about. Now the part the first-timers only learn after a night on Bourbon: the Quarter doesn’t turn off because you’re done. The music runs past 4 AM, the crowds run with it, and a room above it all sounds like sleeping inside a second line. Groups come back from a Quarter-hotel weekend with one review: great two hours, rough eight. Do the trip math instead. On a three-night weekend, a crew spends an afternoon and a night or two in the Quarter and the rest of the time wherever the group actually lives: the kitchen at breakfast, the pool all afternoon, the courtyard after dark. Book for those hours, not the six you’ll spend on Royal Street.
Ten minutes away in the Bywater, the same money buys the opposite arrangement: the whole crew in one villa with 12 bedrooms, a chef-ready kitchen, and a private heated pool, hot tub and courtyard nobody shares. Rideshares circulate constantly, so the Quarter and Frenchmen Street are each a ten-minute ride whenever you want them; Bacchanal, Vaughan’s and BJ’s (the nights out locals actually recommend) are a 10-to-15-minute walk from the villa. And if the plan truly is Bourbon until close, every single night, book the hotel on Bourbon and pack earplugs; that’s a different trip than the one most groups are planning.
