Walking distance to the French Quarter, and what it means for a big group.
The French Quarter is ten minutes from CastleDay by car. For a big group that is usually the right distance: short-term rentals are banned in nearly all of the Quarter, so “walking distance” for a group of fourteen means a hotel block. This page explains the trade-off.
The short answer
What “walking distance” means for a big group.
Short-term rentals are banned in nearly all of the French Quarter. The city’s only exception is a six-block stretch of Bourbon Street zoned for entertainment, which is bars, not houses. So when a group searches for a house within walking distance of the French Quarter, the real inventory is a hotel block (the group split down a hallway, no kitchen, no pool, nowhere for everyone to gather at 1 AM) or a listing that may not be legal. Ask any “walking distance” house for its permit number. Ours is 24-XSTR-24029, and CastleDay is licensed as a hotel.
The Quarter is also loud at night. The music runs past 4 AM and the crowds run with it, and a room above it is hard to sleep in. On a three-night weekend, a group spends an afternoon and a night or two in the Quarter and the rest of the time where the group is staying: the kitchen at breakfast, the pool in the afternoon, the courtyard after dark. Book for those hours.
Ten minutes away in the Bywater, the same money buys the opposite: the whole group in one villa with 12 bedrooms, a kitchen with double refrigerators and dishwashers, and a private heated pool, hot tub and courtyard. Rideshares show up in a few minutes, so the Quarter and Frenchmen Street are each about a ten-minute ride. Bacchanal is a 14-minute walk from the villa, Vaughan’s Lounge is 13, and BJ’s Lounge is 11. If the plan is Bourbon Street until close every night, a hotel on Bourbon is the better fit, and we will say so.

Can a big group rent a house in the French Quarter?

Won’t we spend the whole weekend in rideshares?
Most groups make one or two runs a day: an afternoon in the Quarter, a night on Frenchmen Street, then home to the hot tub. Ten minutes each way. The rest of the weekend happens at the villa.
