Mardi Gras Tips & Tricks
Parades close to castleday
INSERT HERE
Wear Comfortable Shoes
You’ll be walking and standing for hours on uneven pavement so leave the heels at home.
Dress in Layers
New Orleans weather can swing quickly between chilly mornings and warm afternoons. Bring a light rain jacket just in case.
Bring a Catch Bag
Totes or backpacks you don’t mind getting dirty are perfect for holding beads, cups, and other parade throws.
Respect Parade Etiquette
Stay behind barricades, make room for the krewes, dancers and marching bands, and only cross parade streets when there are no floats coming and it is safe to do so. Also, drink responsibly and be aware that during this time, it is difficult for emergency services to reach areas blocked by parade routes.
Plan Transportation Early
Streets close and parking fills up fast so arrive early, carpool, or use streetcars and rideshares. This goes for all transportation during Mardi Gras Season. Please note bus and streetcar routes are detoured and suspended 2 hours before each parade and will resume once parades clear out.
Read this article about navigating “The Box” in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.
Go with the Flow
Don’t over schedule your day. The best moments often happen between parades or while exploring.
Staying Comfortable on the Route
Bring water, keep your phone charged or bring a power bank, and pick a meeting spot in case you get separated from your group. Keep in mind that bathrooms may be hard to come by, so take advantage of ones available to you when you have the chance. Hotels and restaurants are often very friendly when it comes to letting you use restrooms. There are also usually porta potties along parade routes. .
Support Local
Try king cake, gumbo, or po-boys from neighborhood vendors and enjoy the authentic taste of Carnival season.
